HYDERABAD: Police commissioner M V Krishna Rao completed a year in office last month. Asked about his one year in office, Krishna Rao said, “It was not as difficult as I thought it would be. As I have been given a free hand, things have been very easy for me.’’
Krishna Rao regards the enforcement of closure timings for force liquor shops and hotels as an important initiative taken during the last year.
“There were so many drunken brawls happening in the city that something had to be done. The DCPs agreed, and thanks to their commitment, we have been able to enforce the rules, he said.
Among the efforts that have paid off is, according to the commissioner, is the reduction in the number of illegal detentions by shifting lock-ups from police stations. “Now the judges are granting police remand in an increasing number of cases.
As we became more transparent, the judiciary too became more liberal, he said. According to Krishna Rao, corruption in police stations needs to be systematically tackled. “Many officers who are posted in specialised wings are desperate to work in police stations and thus are not motivated. This attitude affects work both at the police stations as well as the specialised wings, he said. To address the problem, the city police is now strictly adhering to posting all inspectors at least once with the ‘non-lucrative’ police stations in the Old City, the commissioner said.
